"I will uphold your trust," Mr. Tinubu assured President Buhari during the ceremony.
President Muhammadu Buhari has conferred the highest national honour in Nigeria, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), on President-elect Bola Tinubu. Additionally, the second highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), was bestowed upon Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima.
The prestigious award ceremony is presently taking place at the Banquet Hall, State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
During the occasion, Mr. Buhari also handed over the transition documents and symbolically passed on the baton of service to the incoming president.
After receiving the transition documents, Mr. Tinubu expressed his gratitude to the outgoing president, whom he referred to as "Mr. Democrat."
The president-elect acknowledged that the details presented by the Chairman of the transition council, Boss Mustafa, in the documents clearly outlined the accomplishments of the past eight years.
Tinubu conveyed to President Buhari that his contributions to Nigeria's national development were undeniable, expressing his delight at assuming the leadership role, stating, "This moment belongs to all of us, and I am filled with pride."
Reiterating his unwavering belief in democracy, Tinubu declared that nothing would deter Nigeria from adhering to its principles. He acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead but expressed confidence in the collective abilities of the nation to confront them.
During the event, Tinubu took the opportunity to specifically commend President Buhari for rectifying the injustice of annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He also commended Buhari for recognizing and honoring Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of that election.
Acknowledging the weight of the responsibility that awaits him, Tinubu assured Buhari, "You have fulfilled your part, and now a great duty will be bestowed upon me. I understand the significance of the honor bestowed on me today and the magnitude of the task ahead."
He concluded by stating that criticism and challenges would inevitably come his way, but he pledged not to disappoint those who have entrusted him with their hopes and aspirations.
Mr. Tinubu is scheduled to be sworn in as Nigeria's president on Monday, May 29th. However, his election is currently being contested in court by some of his opponents, including Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
