Russia and China hit back at a G7 that saw them as a threat

The Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Hiroshima witnessed strong criticism from Moscow and Beijing. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the G7 of focusing on "deterrence" against Russia and China. Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry accused the G7 of hindering international peace and demanded a change in behavior.

The G7 leaders expressed concerns over Russia's assault on Ukraine and China's assertiveness. They pledged to cooperate with China while countering its "malign practices" and emphasized economic security coordination. Beijing responded by urging the G7 not to become an accomplice in American economic coercion and rejecting the G7-dominated Western rules.

The G7 statement highlighted the need for economic security and countering economic coercion without explicitly mentioning China. China's increasing military aggression towards Taiwan and economic penalties against Lithuania have shifted sentiment in Europe.

The G7's focused policy approach towards China marks a significant development. As China seeks to repair ties with Europe and promote peace talks in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's presence at the G7 is seen as a pressure tactic on China.

The US hopes that China will view the summit as a signal of resolve and play a meaningful role in ending the war in Ukraine.
